Blogspiration (1) - Derren Brown Apocalypse

Posted by Charlene // Tags: , ,

(I've decided to retire the Highlight Poetry feature on my blog and start this new one which will allow me to talk about poetry as well as other things that interest me!)

Blogspiration is a weekly meme hosted by GrowingUpYA and Saz101. The meme was created to help spark inspiration among bloggers, readers and writers alike. An inspirational quote/picture/video is posted weekly, on the day of the author's choosing, so that it may inspire creativity, conversation or just a little SOMETHING.

Derren Brown is someone I find immensely inspiring.  He has inspired me to question the things I have taken for granted and to really delve into my psyche to understand what motivates me as a person and to understand what motivates people in general.  Sounds rather grand, but all this thought-provoking analysis comes in entertaining and intriguing TV specials or live shows which always encourages your own rational thinking, and is never preachy or high-handed.  Derren has a great sense of humor and often brings this to his shows, while also bringing dark and macabre elements as it applies.  When he is inspiring, he shows the very best of humanity and when he is dark, OMG it's so disturbing.

His new special which will air in England on October 26th, will have Derren convincing one person that the Apocalypse is really happening - complete with zombies. At first I would think this is going to be one of those dark, disturbing episodes but having read a little more about it, Derren will be trying to show that person and the viewers how important it is to value what you have - your life right now.  Ugh.  I'm probably going to cry watching this.

He's a master mind manipulator, illusionist, and magician who always takes his craft to new levels.  I am so looking forward to this special and the journey it will take me on. I hope it will find its way to youtube or his Hulu channel!  Watch the trailer for the special below! (Edited post 10-22-12 for the new trailer!)

  1. I love watching illusionists who can play with your perceptions this way. I find myself questioning everything when I watch things like this. Then again, I also studied philosophy, so I love the excuse to second guess my assumptions anyway.

Thanks for following my blog. I'm now following you too, and I look forward to your future posts.

  2. I actually love watching Derren's stuff because he kind of explains what he's doing sometimes (but I don't think he explains everything) so I like trying to figure out how he's manipulating people based on some of the techniques he reveals. I'm sure I'm way off though.

Thanks for the follow back, and I look forward to your posts as well! :)

  3. It does sounds interesting and entertaining to watch! I hope they will put the episode on Youtube! :)

Ps: There is this show in the Netherlands where they hypnotize famous people and let them do (really) funny things. Even though it's different, I love watching that show.

    1. Alot of Derren's other shows are on youtube, so I have high hopes that they will put this one up too!

That show sound really fun! Are there clips up anywhere to watch? I am fascinated by hypnotism, I would love to learn how to do it! Just for the fun of it... ;)

    1. Oh I think you'll find his stuff fascinating! I should have put up a link to something for everyone to watch if they want a sample of his work! Oh well, I'll put one here - here's a good starter I think for what Derren is all about. And bonus Simon Pegg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jTwCMX5sUQU I also like this because it gives an idea of how Derren does what he does.

    1. I can imagine it would be very distressing to see a man think he's lost everything, so I am a little afraid for that, but it will be very interesting to see what he does do about it!

      Thanks for the welcome! :)

  6. Whoa! I've never heard of Derren Brown but this sounds INCREDIBLE! The way he targets individuals is really fascinating. I mean, I have honestly never seen or heard of anything like this!!

I wonder if I can watch an episode here in the US. Surely YouTube will have some clips or something.

    Great post!!!

    1. Thank you! And the first episode aired, and was really amazing. I actually think I'd probably have some kind of meltdown if I had to go through that! It definitely already made me appreciate what I have!
